The History of the
Christian Moerlein Brewing Company
In 1853, Christian Moerlein opened the Elm Street Brewery.
The Elm Street Brewery eventually became the Christian Moerlein
Brewery, and the largest brewing company in Cincinnati before
Prohibition.
Between 1812 and Prohibition, Cincinnati played host to more
than 50 breweries. Christian Moerlein Brewing Company
became the most prominent. In fact, in its first year of
production, the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company produced only
one thousand barrels of beer a year. Within a decade, it
was brewing more than 26,000 barrels of beer per year. The
Christian Moerlein Brewing Company was also the only brewery in
Cincinnati to sell their beer internationally.
As was the case for most breweries, the Christian Moerlein
Brewing Company collapsed during Prohibition. However, in
1984, the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company began brewing their
beer again and continues to this day.
